PLEASE READ IF YOU HAVE NEVER USED A RETINOL PRODUCT BEFORE!
BACKGROUND: I do not have sensitive skin, never used a retinol product before. Started the product twice a day and by day 3 I got a NASTY burn as shown in the images below with swelling in both of my eyes that got CONSIDERABLY worse. I stopped using the product and everything got better. The seller, upon seeing by negative review (despite saying I’d try it again later once my symptoms went down), in good faith offered to give me a refund. I did not accept the refund because it didn’t feel right to try to use the product again AND take their money. I decided before I did that, I would give it one more try.RESEARCH: So, during the heck-ish evening where I constantly put aloe on my face due to the terrible burning sensation, I realized–from watching some dermatology videos–that YOU CANNOT GO 0-100 WITH RETINOL CREMES! I have seen some social media influencer videos sprinkled in there, where the horrendous burning is described as “normal” and “natural”… it is not. You shouldn’t be feeling like that: peeling off whole layers of skin and lighting your face up like a Christmas tree. You have to start slow.THE PRODUCT: The bottle says morning and night in the instructions, I believe it says that for someone who is already using retinol cremes. If you are NOT already using it, do not follow these instructions. It is probably best to consult a dermatologist.AFTERMATH: I, personally, decided to use it once every other day at the start and build my tolerance, and that has been the magic ticket. I have been able to use the product and get some benefits without any negative side effects. My skin looks good. I feel good.MY OPINIONS ON THE PRODUCT TODAY: This is a great price for this product, even when it’s not on sale. Retinol creme is incredibly expensive by other brands, and to have all these good things in one is great. It is true what you see in other reviews that the volume is small, but it is VERY clear in the description of the product that this is 1.7 fl oz. That is not a lot of product. That being said, you literally ONLY need one pump to do your face and neck, and using more than one pump, as it says on the bottle, could absolutely cause the disco inferno on your face. The product smells good and feels good. I occasionally have burning if I use products that have hyaluronic acid in it as well (for example, Grace & Stella Eye patches), but that is operator error.CLOSING: I appreciate the good faith of the seller, but now can appreciate the product, too, now that I have understood the error of my ways.

Good facial cream, but DO test it first
Many retinol products come in tiny packaging and don’t provide much cream for the money, but the SimplyVital one seems rather generous in that regard, in terms of how much comes in the little pump-equipped jar.I do very much like the dispenser, which outputs just a small amount on top, and a little goes a long way. My main cautionary note is this retinol & hyaluronic acid cream is potent…and I have sensitive skin. It was fine on most of my face, although did produce noticeable reddening when first applied, but after about a week’s use, I found it was irritating the tops of my cheekbones and under my eyes. In other words, I needed to use far less in those locations AND not do it every day.There’s no scent that I could detect, and it spreads well and evenly. Again, I suggest only using care when applying it and ensure it’s not too much, too fast for your skincare regimen. Otherwise though, I have seen significant improvement where I needed the most: Under the eyes, at crow’s feet, and one set of lines near my chin. Basically, I still use this product, but maybe twice a week rather than daily. In between, I use milder products.

I think this actually works
I am one of those people who doesn’t want to spend a ton of money on skin products. I have terrible follow-through on using the millions of items I have tried and I don’t really give them a fair chance to work before I abandon them. I am looking for immediate results from my skin products, no matter how unrealistic that is.This had a decent price and good reviews so I gave it a whirl. I have to say I do think it has taken years off of my appearance. I have 6 kids– 3 of them quite young– and I’m 45. To say the last few years have put it on me is an understatement. It is all I can do to get through the day, so I have been terrible about my upkeep and the bags and creases show it. I have been using this for probably two months now, and in my mind, there was a noticeable difference right away and there continues to be a vast improvement. I can promise, this is the only minimal extra effort I have managed in this time period. I do think it works. I think it has helped me look more 45 than I was looking before. Honestly the other day someone thought I was well younger than even that. That was pretty customary prior to kids 4, 5, and 6…but no one has assumed I am younger than my actual age in quite some time. So I do think this does the trick.
